PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Pasadena will pay a little over $1 million in settlement agreements with the parents of Kendrec McDade, a young man who was killed by police in March 2012.

The Pasadena Star-News reports Monday that the city will pay mother Anya Slaughter $850,000 and father Kenneth McDade $187,500.

The parents filed separate federal civil rights and wrongful-death lawsuits against the city and Police Department after their son was fatally shot when officers responded to a call of an armed robbery. Officers said they feared for their safety and Kendric McDade was clutching his waistband. The 19-year-old was shot eight times.

Kendric McDade was later found to be unarmed and the 911 caller, Oscar Carillo, admitted he lied about a weapon to get a faster police response.
